... the tragic tale of Jeremiah Brandreth and his ill fated role in the Pentrich Revolution of 1817.

Brandreth an out-of-work stocking maker, living in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, who was executed for treason after being convicted of plotting to overthrow the Government of the United Kingdom. He was hanged for treason, then his head severed with an axe, for allegedly plotting a revolution.

lyrics

They hung me from the gallow-es in front of Derby goal,
Cos I’d dared to march against the crown I lost mi mortal soul.

CHORUS
O Hang me, oh hang me, o hang o hang me down
I got sent to the gallow-es cos I marched against the crown

Break

Mi children they were starving, my wife was gaunt and lean, when we marched out from Pentrich in 1817

We marched out through Ripley, we marched to Codnor top
By the time we got to Giltbrook we were drunk and we’d lost the plot

They searched for us all o’er, put a bounty on our heads
And soon there’d be trial, and Brandreth would be dead

CHORUS

Break

Though we hung down from that rope, we’d still not lost our breath
The hangman took his axe to me, and he cut off my head

How the crowd did boo, and how the crowd did hiss
He held my head up by the hair and out the blood did piss

Don’t be like Jeremiah Brandreth, don’t March against the crown
Or you’ll find y’sen just like him, hanging, hanging down

CHORUS x 2

Brandreth’s head O’ Brandreth’s head they held it up so high
For his part in the revolution a hungry man die! X 2
