Protest At The Protest

about

In February 2016 The Guardian ran an article by Jonathan Luxmoore and Christine Ellis called ... "Not talkin' bout a revolution: where are all the protest songs?"
www.theguardian.com/music/2016/feb/…r-martin-carthy ...
The idea is of course nonsense and there are hundreds of active folk singers ... it's just that most of them live outside London in the deprived northern towns and cities ... So here is a protest song ... that protests against the nonsense suggestion that protest singers no longer exist ... Just try for a moment listening to Quiet Loner, Joe Solo, Alun Parry, The Hurriers and Ferocious Dog ... the list is endless and I can't name them all ... BUT just listen, protest songs are alive and well...!

lyrics

… I'll protest at the protest
of the bloke that said that protest
... wasn't part of
folk song any more

Woody Guthrie's spirit lives on and on
and Pete Seeger hasn't really gone
Billy Bragg might be like a dog with a bone
but don't go thinkin' that he is alone

There's plenty o folk in them Northern towns
singing .... protest songs of their own
They've watched society breaking down
And chronicled it all into songs

Chorus
Protest mi boys, protest mi boys
Protest as loud as you can
Never have it said in this fair land
That you died a passive man

We've seen all of the social injustice; we've seen the towns all boarded up
We've seen the people sleeping rough, and believe me we've had enough

We're singing louder than ever, but in London they don't listen well
We've already predicted the future, a savage dystopian hell

I'll protest at the protest
of the bloke that said that protest
... wasn't part of
folk song any more

Chorus x 2
Protest mi boys, protest mi boys
Protest as loud as you can
Ne'er have it said in this fair land
That you died a passive man
